I went on a whale watch today to the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary in the Gulf of Maine. We left from Provincetown, MA around 2 pm. It was a hot HOT day, but once we got on the water the temperature dropped to a more comfortable level. The Gulf was almost dead calm – waves were less than 1 foot. We saw a number of humpback whales, a mother and her calf, and this one whale who was busy blowing bubbles, circling, and feeding. At one point the whale popped up to the surface fairly close to the boat with a mouth full of food. I managed to be in the right spot at the right moment to capture this picture. I was able to get a number of good photos of the whales. I’ll post a few more pictures in the next few days with a little more information.
How I photographed the whales (short version) – Canon 5D Mark III with a 24-105mm lens set to shutter priority (1/200 sec), ISO 100, continuous shooting, polarizing filter attached.
