Quick! The Moon is Setting!
Sometimes the difference between an interesting photograph and an average photograph is just the matter of a minute or two. One moment the sky is lit up with color and texture and the next moment it has become the normal blue/grey slightly overcast color we see everyday. This is exactly what happened to me today.
This morning I woke up early, glanced out the window and there was the moon – bright and round and surrounded by a bank of pink and red and purple clouds. It was incredible. I just stood there staring at it for a few moments watching it slowly become more obscured by the clouds as it set until it occurred to me that I could grab my camera, open the window and take a picture.
In the time it took me to grab my camera and get back to the window the moon had already started to fade and the colors had begun to lose their saturated spectacularness (is that a word?). I snapped off 3 quick pictures and within a minute of that the moon was completely obscured and the sky had become overcast and gray. A hint of yellow remained but overall it now looked like the beginning of the dull and rainy day that it would become. If I hadn’t acted quickly I would have missed an absolutely awe inspiring few moments.
So the lesson I continue to learn – to catch the really spectacular colors of early morning you HAVE to get up early, before sunrise so you can be in place and set up and ready to go. The incredible colors are only there for a few seconds. Maybe a few minutes at most. You have to be ready to make the most of them while they are there.
So set your alarm clock and may you be lucky enough to get up early and see the awesome colors of dawn. It’s totally worth it!
